What/where is The Vista? and more

We will be in Columbia SC this weekend - have never been before - what/where is The Vista? Is it an open air dining/shopping area - is it nice? Are there any other dining/shopping areas that are intesting - can be slightly funky or artsy - doesnt have to be chi-chi (but chi-chi is good!) Specific street or neighborhood names would be great! Also does Columbia itself have an old upscale residential neighborhood with fine southern homes and the like? THANKS MUCH!

The Vista is an area of bars and restaurants and some shops in downtown Cola. It is basically on Gervais street, between Assembly and Huger. There are several good restaurants. There are some larger older homes in general area. Shopping in Columbia is not right downtown. There are two good malls about 15-20 minutes from downtown, in two different directions. One is Columbiana Centre and the other is the Village at Sandhills.

thanks much!

Five Points is another dining/shopping area that has some cute shops. It is right by USC, so it has a lot of college students, but it is off of Gervais down from the Vista. Coming from the Vista, you would turn right onto Harden Street and eventually get to the shops/bars/restaurants. If you go through Five Points down Harden up to Wheat Street and turn left, you are in the heart of Shandon, which has older, upscale homes.
