My husband and I are planning a trip to Charleston next month and are thinking about taking the Jail House Ghost Tour. One of the reviews of the tour states that it is not in a safe area and you should drive to the Jail House for the Tour. Is this a safe area and will it be safe to walk at night. We are staying at Bed and Breakfast at 4 Unity Alley

No need to worry, but the Jail area is kind of creepy. In every city, a healthy dose of ';street smarts'; at night would always be necessary. Oh, and at night - good idea to take a flashlight as the sidewalks can be uneven (and that is definitely not safe!)

If you have a car, you might want to drive. There is a ';free'; parking lot next to the jail. If you do not have a car, do as CultureHound suggests - carry a flash light, and be aware of your surroundings.
The biggest surprise to me, as someone who has lived in/around NYC for many years, has been how very dark and quiet the streets of Charleston become at night. In New York, there are always people (including police) on the street at any hour, and the everything is well illuminated with streetlights. Not so in Charleston%26#39;s residential neighborhoods.
