Thanksgiving dinner in Charleston

My family will be visiting Charleston over the Thanksgiving holiday, and it occurs to me that not all restaurants will be open. Of those that are serving, it would probably be a good idea to have advance reservations. Can anyone advise me on Charleston restaurants that generally remain open on Thanksgiving? Many thanks--

Thanksgiving dinner in Charleston

Been to Charleston many many times but only once for Thanksgiving in 2007. I can wholeheartedly recommend not going to Middleton Place for Thanksgiving Dinner. The gardens are magnificent, but the Thanksgiving Dinner is quite pathetic.

...just checked out various postings and this person seems to have many bad experiences in restaurants, even in his home town. Too bad. I have never eaten my Thanksgiving meal at Middleton Place (I am with my family at home) but have eaten many catered dinners, receptions and restaurant meals there and they have always been wonderful!

I guess if you eat out enough you%26#39;ll be able to quickly distinguish between the good the bad and the ugly. Thanks for checking out my history - why does it surprise you that I could have a poor retaurant meal in my own hometown? While you were snooping I also hope you read my review of the Middleton Place Restaurant Thanksgiving experience. I doubt you would have wanted to share that experience.

No, I%26#39;m not afraid to let my voice be heard when an overpriced-underperforming restaurant rears its ugly head because there are plenty out there. It%26#39;s from our collective experiences that we%26#39;re able to share information and hopefully prevent others from making our same mistakes. It also helps us by forcing restaurants to either shape up or lose customers.

I just got an email from the Maverick group. Slightly North of braod, High Cotton and the Old Village Post House (in Mt P.) are all open for Thanksgiving. High Cotton is one of my favortes-fresh local ingredients, creative combinations. Have fun. November isbeautiful in our neck of the woods.

  • Shem Creek dining suggestions

Just got into town for a 5 day stay and are very interested in suggestions for quality seafood restaurants in Shem Creek area.. We are not big fried food people but love everything else. Suggestions, please? Many thanks

    Shem Creek dining suggestions

Reds on Shem Creek is a cool place. Shem Creek Grille is good also.

    Shem Creek dining suggestions

Thank you.. will give one of them a try

If you want to head out a little farther towards the beach, try the Boathouse at Breech Inlet.

We love the oysters in every form (fried, steamed, stew, shooters) at Shem Creek Bar %26amp; Grille.

    -gn

Yes, I third the Shem Creek Bar and Grille!! :) Excellent food, excellent service, and excellent view at sunset!

When Red%26#39;s has their steamed oyster buckets and the evening is a little cool, there just isn%26#39;t any place better! A bucket of steamed oysters, a glove, a knife and crackers and cocktail sauce is all you need (besides the longneck bucket!). www.redsicehouse.com

If you don%26#39;t have to be right on the water, Locklear%26#39;s is my favorite for great deals on terrific food, with lots of seafood choices. (it%26#39;s just ';before'; Shem Creek, coming from Charleston)

I was absolutely delighted with RB%26#39;s Shem%26#39;s Creek. Reasonably priced, excellent food with atmosphere on intercoastal......best collard greens ever and I%26#39;m from Bklyn. A definite eating experience.

I don%26#39;t want to upset the apple cart, but we spend at least a week in the Charleston area each year, and are sometimes down there 2-3 times during the year. We generally eat dinner out every night while we%26#39;re there, so I%26#39;ve tried a lot of restaurants over the past few years. In general, I have not been very impressed with the restaurants on Shem Creek. We have eaten several meals at Vickery%26#39;s on Shem Creek that were memorable for the sunset/dolphin watching off their back deck, but not for the food. We had a particularly miserable meal at RB%26#39;s on one trip. To me, when you%26#39;re sitting at a table watching shrimp boats pass by, you don%26#39;t want to be eating shrimp that taste as though they were frozen a good six months earlier. That was our experience at RB%26#39;s. This is just my opinion, but if you want ';quality'; seafood, particularly dishes that aren%26#39;t fried, then I would skip Shem Creek and eat downtown. To me, Hank%26#39;s has the best seafood in the area and I%26#39;ve been reading good things about FISH since they reopened.

I agree that Hanks is excellent. It is my favorite seafood restaurant in the area.

That said, we love going over the bridge to Shem Creek ... Usually to ';The Wreck of the Richard and Charlene'; for a fish shack meal.

we have yet to have a less than spectacular meal anywhere on shems creek. watching the shrimp boats come in and the sunset seems to make the beer colder and the oysters go down easier. sorry i cannot suggest the primo place there, but they are all good, an i haven%26#39;t had one bad meal there. i so wish i was on shems creek now......go enjoy!!!

    Loris for Thanksgiving

I will be visiting family in Loris for Thanksgiving. What is the temperature during November? What fun things are there to do with teens? Can you recommend a hotel that welcomes pets? Would it be silly to consider staying in Myrtle Beach? Thanks for your advice

    Loris for Thanksgiving

Loris is a small agricultural community - lovely, but nothing to do. It%26#39;s about half an hour from Myrtle Beach.Weather is hard to predict for November - it could be warm and 70s or cold and 40s. Best wishes.

    Anything to do with Tweens

    I have a 10 and 12 year old

we live in Atlanta and looking for somewhere not to faar to spend the weekend.

Anything fun to do in Columbia? We dont want to bore the kids to death.

I checked the things to do board but saw a few parks but that was about it.

    Need suggestions?

    Also great places to eat...

We love BBQ and comfort food.

    Anything to do with Tweens

Riverbanks Zoo is world class...really. If you like zoos, I promise it is worth the trip.

    Anything to do with Tweens

Oh, comfort food: Yesterday%26#39;s in Five Points. Try the meatloaf or the Arkansas Traveler.

Barbecue is very subjective and South Carolinians like mustard based sauce, but Hudson%26#39;s Smoke House and Shealy%26#39;s are my favorites.

Columbia has some excellent museums downtown...I second the zoo. Maurice%26#39;s BBQ is good.

    Just in

Just got back home Tues and wanted to post a couple quick shout outs!

    1) Grumpy Grouper on Pope Ave. Went there Monday night we were on to something b/c they were packed. Sat outside and had great service and food. I had the scallops which were great and wife had blackened snapper which was good also. Waiter was super friendly and efficient w/out being overbearing.

    2) We always hang at Aunt Chiladas when we are in town, but I never write anything about them. For those of you looking for a laid back bar to have some great drinks and decent food this place is great. Very attuned to sporting events and go out of their way to accomodate all the different fans. Get there early and claim a TV and hold on to it. Great wings, burgers, and mexican. Friendly staff and great happy hour drinks and food. A little divey, so if your sensibilities are tender might not be for you.

    3) Finally, avoid Steamers, we have tried them a few times over the years, always hoping for an improvement. They have yet to deliver. Tourist trap for rubes. (they%26#39;ve gotten alot of my money so I guess that makes me a rube too)

We are heading Charleston on Oct 29 for 8 days. We would like to see a bit a Savannah as well. We love to walk, so it sounds like both places are good for that. He%26#39;s a personal friend who has lived in Charleston most of his life. He leads trips in the area, particularly in the ACE Basin (Asheepoo, Combahee %26amp; Edisto Rivers). He%26#39;s a wealth of knowledge.

Give him a call, he%26#39;ll get you to alligators, blackwater, rice plantations, etc.

Several years ago he put together a cool little guidebook of trips within an hour of Charleston. It%26#39;s very popular and has been updated w/GIS info, etc.

Thanks for the responses. Loks like we will be in Charleston at the King George over Halloween, then we%26#39;ll venture out in to the wild, then to Savannah. Any input as to unique things to do on Halloween night? (We are both 50, so take it easy on us)!

Also, we are trying not to use a car while in Charleston. Sounds like we can walk everywher, but can we get to the plantation from an ni town shuttle or will we have to rent a car?

THere are tour companies that are happy to drive you to the plantations on Hwy 61, and you can technically take a bus almost all the way out to Boone Hall Plantation. (route 40; www.ridecarta.com) Ask your concierge - they can make all of the arrangements.

Halloween - Boone Hall Farm (next to the Plantation) has a pumpkin patch, hay rides, and a giant corn maze. www.bonehallplantation.com and click on the Halloween icon.

Oopsie - that would be www.boonehallplantation.com I dare not try to figure out if there is really a bone hall plantation! If there is - don%26#39;t tell me!

    - a red-faced Culturehound!

Middleton Place has added kayaking and some other great outdoor activities. Check it out at www.midddletonplace.org. There is an icon with a kayak at the top of the home page.

Great tips on the kayaking. Thanks!

Any feedback on using the bus service? It looks pretty extensive and with a multiple day pass, pretty inexpensive. How about taking that from the historic district to the plantations? I see they have a route. Are they safe or do you not recommend using them outside the historic district?

Thanks again for your help in setting up our trip!

Bone Hall would be great for Halloween!

The International Center for Birds of Prey is on up Hwy 17 in Awendaw. They just recently started allowing the public to tour. Don%26#39;t know the hours, but it would be a great place to see eagles, osprey, owls, etc, all being rehabilitated.

Also, there%26#39;s a ferry to Bull Island. It%26#39;s a beautiful windswept beach with no McMansions. It%26#39;s a long day though so prepare for that if you want to go. have fun.

Thanks for the tip on the birds of prey.. These are exactly the ';out of the norm'; things we are looking for rather thatn the standard tourist sites. Keep %26#39;em coming !

Great marketing idea - Bone Hall - I hope someone from Boone Hall sees this thread.

Other ';not the norm'; things to do...Visit the Hunley (open on weekends only) and a surprisingly busy downtown is Georgetown, SC. Beaufort is a better stop since there isn%26#39;t a big paper mill in Beaufort (Georgetown can be stinky if the wind is blowing wrong)

For an out-of-the way place to eat, my vote is for Seewee Restaurant (it%26#39;ll be a good stop when you go to the Birds of Prey place).

If you are golfers, try Charleston National, which is extremely ';one with nature'; even though it%26#39;s in a neighborhood. (lots of cart paths over water; watch for gators)

If you want to go ';antiquing'; for a day, you can spend a goodly amount of time at Hungryneck Antiques in Mt. P, which has a blend of junk, Asian imports and antiques (as opposed to the antique shops downtown are for the person who is looking to furnish a home with stuff from France or Italy and has much spare change!)

Oh, in Mt. P go to Gullah Cuisine for lunch. Very unique!

    Enjoy!

Gas Price Info for those driving to Charleston

Today I heard about ';gas wars'; in Georgetown, and as I had business there, I made the drive up. Sure enough it was absolutely true - $2.59/gal for regular at all three gas stations just south of Georgetowm, SC.

Anyone driving south through G-town, be sure to time your gas purchases to hit one of those stations.

I went through there at 5 PM today and it was 2.49 a gallon.

  • Kayaking and alligators

OK, my trip to HH is in less than two months, and I am starting to read through some of my old posts that have GREAT recommendations for restaurants, etc.

Anyway, one question I still have is about kayaking and alligators. My husband loves Hobie Cats, but from what I%26#39;ve read, it%26#39;s not big in the HH area. He also loves Kayaking, and mind you, he does this in the ocean in NJ. And do you know how rough the ocean is in NJ????? Needless to say, I%26#39;ve never done that...only kayaked once or twice in the bay.

So....where can one kayak in HH? And, most importantly, where can one kayak where there are NO ALLIGATORS? Mind you, I am the person you hate at Disney World who is screaming her lungs off on Goofys Barnstormer miniature rollar coaster in Mickey%26#39;s Toon Town or whatever they are calling it this year.

So, I%26#39;d like to show my husband that I can share kayaking with him...only I don%26#39;t want to die by alligator.

    Kayaking and alligators

davsaz: Just to put your mind at rest, ';death by alligator'; is extremely rare in Hilton Head. There are great kayak guides that can you take out and I%26#39;m sure they stay away from the alligator infested areas! lol.

We took the dolphin kayak excursion out of South Beach Marina and had fun, but I have read some pretty amazing posts about other kayak companies and they sounded fantastic. I%26#39;m sure those posters will respond to this. If you put ';kayak'; in the search box in the upper left hand corner, I%26#39;m sure you will find those posts on your own.

As well, if you are still two months away from going to Hilton Head, I would get info now and phone the companies that sound good to you. Not everyone may be operating yet in two months, or on a full schedule. You will probably have to reserve ahead of time.

    Hope this helps,

    D in Muskoka.

    Kayaking and alligators

    davsaz,

I share your concern. There is no where to kayak where there are no alligators along the coast - but I have never heard of anyone being bothered by one (not that I would attempt it). My concern isn%26#39;t so much once I%26#39;m in the kayak - it%26#39;s if it tips over! Although lots and lots of people do it without incident and have a blast!

I would say your chance of dying on the highway coming to Hilton Head is about 100,000 times greater than being killed by an alligator in a kayak. Drive safely.

And by the way, you don%26#39;t have to kayak in the ocean. I would highly recommend Broad Creek, the May River, or Calibogue Sound.

Also search for ';kayak'; in this forum to find recommendations for tour companies.

Have fun, and come back and tell us how it was!

I%26#39;m a kayak instructor and very familiar w/paddling in the lowcountry areas. Yes, there are alligators, they live in brackish water (which is a combination of salt/fresh water). If you are paddling in salt water, no alligators. You%26#39;re not going to know by looking at the water what it is, hopefully, your outfitter will know, since the lines are not well defined.

Alligators aren%26#39;t totally stupid and generally stay away from kayakers, the kayaks are larger than the gators and the gators know that. They will just lay on the bank and watch you paddle by. You don%26#39;t bother them, they won%26#39;t bother you.

Also, the boats that are used by outfitters who lead trips where the clientele are mostly ';newbies'; are very stable and difficult to turn over. Many times the boats will be tandems (2 people to a boat), which are even more difficult to flip.

Just a word of advice if you do intend to take a kayak trip and have not paddled before, buy a pair of those beach shoes w/the rubber bottoms and mesh tops, they will be most comfortable in a kayak. You need something that is secure on your foot, don%26#39;t plan on paddling in flip-flops (tevas w/velcro straps are okay, but not ideal).

So, take a trip w/a guide and enjoy. If you see a gator, take his picture and keep on moving.

We did a kayak tour last week with Kayak Hilton Head, www.kayakhiltonhead.com, and it was very easy, and enjoyable. The tour was on Broad Creek which cuts through the middle of Hilton Head. We saw a pair of dolphins thrash feeding, that was really cool. We also saw a variety of birds, and had a very educational tour. They also rent kayaks, and after having a guided tour, I would feel very comfortable exploring the waters on our own. We used a double kayak, but I would probably go with a single next time.

You will see alligators in the lagoons in most plantations but the lagoons in Palmetto Dunes that are all inter-connected are salt water and there are no alligators there (ok, maybe one passes through on occasion but they are nothing like thee are in other lagoons). I sent last spring break kayaking with my family for hours on end throughout Palmetto dunes and it was one of the most relaxing and enjoyable things (a good owrk out as well) that I have ever done. You can rent them right there as well. I can%26#39;t wait to go back again this spring and do it again.

We%26#39;ve also done the kayak tour on Broad Creek but I enjoyed the flat calm waters of the lagoons much more. Just depends what you want to see. If you want the marsh tour, borad creek is fine. If you want to see dolphins, stick to a power boat that can find them more easily. Me, I wanted the peace and tranquility of the kayak and nature. I did a lot of kayak fishing in the lagoon as well which was fun too.

We have a Huntington villa on the 11 mile lagoon in Palmetto Dunes and there are definitely alligators in the lagoon. I would say we see one every other trip at our place. The water is brackish, in fact, enough so that fish cannot reproduce in it.

If you want to see our pal, go here:

    hiltonheadlife.com/hiltonheadphotogallery/鈥?/a>

    It%26#39;s picture #3.

Of course, this is no reason to avoid the PD lagoon, in fact as I said in my earlier post in this thread it should not be a concern.

Sorry I haven%26#39;t responded to all of your answers, and thank you very much for them.

All I can say is.......sigh........I am resigned to being eaten by an alligator as I try to prove to my husband that I am the ';outdoors'; type while I try to convince him to put HH on the radar screen for retirement. Oh well.

The gators have only eaten three kayakers this season. Just make sure you take someone slower than you on the trip and have them carry a dead chicken and you should be fine.

    %26gt;

%26gt; have them carry a dead chicken and you

    %26gt; should be fine....

    %26gt;

LOL! We kayak coastal SC waters once or twice a week and have never had gator problems. We have found it%26#39;s helpful to sing loudly while we%26#39;re kayaking. Just in case the tour guide fails to tell you that, you%26#39;ll want to remind him.

Wish to Move to Greenville SC

    Hello everyone!

My boyfriend and I are very interested in moving to Greenville SC. This city looks absolutely gorgeous. I was wondering if anyone would be able to help with some questions. We have a 1 year old boxer, so we%26#39;d prefer to live near a dog park. Are there any dog parks near downtown? How is the cost of living and job market? I currently work in the IT field (desktop support, helpdesk, web design, etc) and my boyfriend is a bartender.

    after christmas family getaway

we are considering a short getaway for our family which will be 6 adults, 3 children, ages 6,5%26amp;5 and our little dog. can anyone tell me what shows and activities we might enjoy? also a place to stay where there would be an indoor pool? thanks

    after christmas family getaway

The Christmas shows stay around until the end of January or so, and they are always great. Most of the major hotels/resorts have indoor pools/heated lazy river rides. The hardest part of your request will be to find a pet friendly place with the other amenities. I would start my search with ';pet friendly'; if you must take your dog. We own our condo, but our resort does not even allow owners to bring pets, so, when we go, we usually board our min. poodle at A DOGS WAY INN. A litle high, but very nice with conscientious people. Then we can take her out for a day on the beach and back whenever we want.

    after christmas family getaway

I%26#39;m not sure about the pet thing either..But the kids would love the Dunes Village Resort. They have a indoor water park. Also try the Ripley%26#39;s Aquarium.

    myrtle beach north end

    Hi,

My husband and I will be travelling to Myrtle Beach at the end of October. I have looked at TAs hotel reviews until my head hurts. We would like an ocean front accomodation in the north end that is CLEAN and quiet. Easy parking would be a plus.

    myrtle beach north end

Are you meaning the north end of Myrtle or North Myrtle Beach?

    myrtle beach north end

The north end of Myrtle Beach - around 77th, Barefoot Landing area.

Carolina Winds, Marriott Resort at Grande Dunes, Grande Shores, Ocean Creek Resort.

Great deals to be had if you are wanting Royale Palms. I know that if you check vrbo.com and you%26#39;ll find some great deals! Check out its reviews on TA!! Very beautiful, brand new (less than 2 years) and absolutely gorgeous. Right down the street from Tanger outlets and a short distance to Barefoot Landing!

Barefoot Landing is the Windy Hill section of North Myrtle Beach...(the city). From there to northern Myrtle Beach is around 4 miles. There%26#39;s so much between the 2 that many don%26#39;t even know there are 2 different cities. The part between the 2 ( restaurant row, stretch along Arcadian Shores, Tanger Outlet North, Sea Watch, Hilton, etc.) is county governed.

You may want to check some maps to be sure the north end of MB (and not southern end of North Myrtle Beach) is where you want to be.

You didn%26#39;t mention a price range, but if looking to keep the cost down, check out Long Bay...a nice place with spacious %26amp; well-kept indoor %26amp; outdoor pool areas %26amp; a convenient parking garage.

Certainly not on a par with Marriott Grand Dunes, but at a fraction of the price.

Try the Seawatch Plantation. Most of it is owned by Wyndam (timeshares) but the Seawatch also has a hotel section (North Tower) that looks right out on the beach.

We%26#39;re here right now and I can tell you that it is quiet and peaceful (great for me, but the teenager isn%26#39;t so happy about it). It%26#39;s not very crowded so there are plenty of chairs at the pools (4 outdoor, 2 heated/covered but still outdoor and MANY hottubs scattered around). There is also PLENTY of space on the beach to set up your chairs/umbrella or whatever cover you choose.

The Seawatch has 1,2 and 3 bedroom accomodations to choose from. I%26#39;ve always stayed in a 2 bedroom but for just the 2 of you a one bedroom would be fine and you should be able to get a great deal at that time of year.

Within a mile of the condo there%26#39;s also Tanger Outlets, Walmart, Marshall%26#39;s and several places to eat. The Seawatch is kinda considered to be on restaurant row so there are plenty of great places to eat within a short distance.

Does Seawatch have complimentary breakfast buffet or is there a charge?

Well . . . it%26#39;s complimentary if your attending the sales pitch ;) Otherwise . . . I think I saw a sign that said it was about $6. My suggestion would be to either fix your own in your condo or go out to one of the wonderful pancake houses in the area.

We always stay at Fairfield Inn. We are leaving on Sunday 12th and got a great rate of $49. night with micro and refrig. in wonderfully comfortable room only 1 block from beach. This is North Myrtle Beach.

Nobody ever mentions Fairfield Inn (part of Marriott chain) and now we never even bother with anyone else as we know what to expect and are always satisfied. Beds are wonderful, service excellent, and breakfast is INCLUDED! No - I dont work for them, just appreciate such a great place. Have stayed at Fairfield Inn%26#39;s all over the country. Everything works too!

Water temps are in the mid to upper 70%26#39;s on nice days. Might even make it to 80 on a really warm day. A cold front is coming through in the next 24hrs that will drop the water temps into the low 70%26#39;s fairly quickly.

    Water Temps

Are you referring to the ocean or pools? I was wondering about the ocean.

    Thanks,

    Cheryl

Here is a NOAA link to the weather station at the Spring Maid pier in Myrtle Beach - the column on the right (WTMP) is the ocean water temperature - looks like its 76 to 77 the past 2 days.

I hope you do decide to go and you have great weather! We really enjoyed our first fall beach trip and plan on going back next year. We had great weather the whole week and it rained on our trip home which was no problem.

    basketscrapper,

I was referring to the ocean temps. Water temps will cool quickly now with the rain and cooler weather.

Anyone got a ';real deal'; by waiting to book til you got to .

    .. to Charleston???

My husband and I are coming down for 1 night. We have tickets for the dinner cruise outing. ( Oct 25 ) Just curious if we should wait and book a room going thru the Tourist center... and possibly get a better rate. I like staying at the Embassy and the Ansonborough Inn - but their prices are running 300 a night. That is a little much for just one night... for me anyway. We would like to stay downtown somewhere - so we can explore before our cruise.

Thanks in advance for any opinions or advice.

Anyone got a ';real deal'; by waiting to book til you got to .

The reason they%26#39;re probably running high is that Oct 25 is the day/night of Chazzfest.

If you haven%26#39;t stayed at the Mills House before, you might give it a try - rooms run usually $150 less. Also - you might try booking through an online travel site such as Hotwire - just make sure you pick the Historic District.

    Enjoy!

Unfortunately for you, October is Prime season. Yes, you will find many of the hotels at $300 a night with The Mills House being one of them. You%26#39;ll also find that this is the last weekend for the Candlelight House tours. Like many popular destinations, our hotel rates are based on demand. There is never set prices that stay throughout the year. The only time to get the best rates is the Summer (because of the heat, tourists tend to flock to the beaches)January and February and at this time rates could be as low as $129 -$150 a night! March through the beginning of June (Spoleto Festival) and September to November (beware of high rates $249 - $300)

You can try Mt. Pleasant where the rates generally stay the same and just travel over the bridge into Charleston. Not actually the same but worth a try.

Also, you may want to see if the places like the Elliott House Inn which is now individually owned. Try vrbo.com and type in Charleston. You may find some great deals with that! Good luck!

I just booked the Mills House via Hotwire for 10/19-10/21 for $119 per night. The Mills House website%26#39;s lowest price was over $200 per night.

That%26#39;s a great deal on the Mills House! Congratulations! Enjoy your trip!

How did you know you were getting the Mills House. When I called the Holiday Inn 1-800 number, the best rate they offered me for Sun-Weds was $230. Please reply to robsmithson@bellsouth.net

I just got on hotwire and I don%26#39;t think the Mills House is on the list for your date. Sorry.

    Thanks

Alot of us are fed up with the new laws and ordinances we are seeing go into effect down there. We collectively spend large amounts of money in and around Myrtle Beach. I myself spent a little over 2 grand not counting the hotel room when I was there in August. But we wont be coming soon. If I cant bring my bike down there without being harrassed then I%26#39;m sure as hell not going to bring my family there for vacation. I bet the elected officials in Myrtle Beach will be singing quite a different tune this time next year. We%26#39;re fed up and we%26#39;re not taking it anymore. We%26#39;ll boycott your town and bypass you on the way to Florida. Trust me, Try us. Heres a link to a discussion:

Understood! Please also understand there are people on the other side of this discussion who feel just as strongly as you do!

As an individual who owns a couple of condos there, the simple fact is that more damage is done during the 2 bike festivals than all the rest of the year. That said, I have had some very nice people to rent during the bike weeks, and would love to rent to the same type of people again, however there is no way to differentiate between those who will respect my property and those who do not until after the fact. I think peer pressure WITHIN the group will do more to bring harmony than outside pressures.

Hotel and business owners, like individual owners, are not out to';get'; anyone. It just becomes a question of what will be best(profitable?) in the long run.

    Hey Liquid Edge -

This is a battle that is being played out daily in the local newspapers, and many of us who live here share your views, while obviously, many do not. I%26#39;m not sure hindsight will come within a year, but at some point, the wisdom of these steps will surely be questioned.

The entire Myrtle Beach/Grand Strand area is undergoing a painful transition from being primarily a tourism-oriented economy to a significant permanent retirement destination. Elected officials and the entire community in general are struggling with how to serve both masters. In many cases, it%26#39;s seen as an either-or situation, and the balance of power can be perceived as swinging toward the retirees. Many of these would applaud your decision to bypass the Grand Strand because they have chosen to ignore the financial implications of reduced tourism. Some factions of the retirement community could care less if any tourists showed up. Unfortunately, they are failing to recognize that many of the things that make this area attractive to retirees - plentiful restaurants, attractions, shopping, etc - exist only because it%26#39;s also a major tourist area.

Unfortunately, this narrow minded approach knows no boundaries. After the ban-the-bikers crusade is complete, spring breakers will very likely become the next target. The winds of change are blowing in Myrtle Beach...

    Charleston's weather in February

What is Charleston%26#39;s typical February weather? Temperature?

    Charleston's weather in February

Average high is 60; record high was 83.

    http://weather.msn.com/monthly_averages.aspx?wealocations=wc:USSC0051%26amp;q=Charleston%2c+SC+forecast:averagesm

The big difference (for folks like us from CT and NJ) is that there is no icy chill and there is no snow. The palmettos are ever-green. Even some flowers will be blooming in February. If the sun is strong, you might even enjoy lying out in a protected area.

February is a great time for touring around Charleston ... but not for a beach vacation!

    Charleston's weather in February

Indeed. Feb is a ';transition'; month and can be gorgeous or chilly, but last Feb I overheard a couple from the north say ';At home, we%26#39;d be wearing shorts in this weather';.

On average - plan on 40%26#39;s at night; low 60%26#39;s day, some rain.

    Ocean one resort

Sorry about all the changes for you! Maybe you are getting all of the travel stress out of the way and things are being set for smooth sailing from here on:-) Jen

This place looks top shelf! Let us know how you enjoyed your stay!

Have you gone on your trip yet? If so how was the Ocean One resort?

I have stayed at the resort the weekend of the 10th of Oct and it was wonderful and actually going back the weekend of the 25th of Oct. The view wa amazing. I stayed on the 19th floor in a 3 bedroom and I was totally happy with everything. My first trip was without the children and now I going back to take the children.

I stayed on the 21st floor in a room with floor to ceiling windows and a balcony facing the pier and the ocean. If I%26#39;m not mistaken I had one of the best if not the best room in the hotel since it only has 21 floors. Let me tell you, the hotel is top notch. You wont find anywhere in Myrtle Beach better to stay. The views are great and the hotel is awesome. Good luck to you.

When we were coming to interview for a job then look for a house we were here three times in a month...we usually stay at Island Vista on vacations but couldn%26#39;t justify the expense. All three times we stayed at Oceans One.Super nice staff and excellent prices and new clean rooms.

First time we stayed in the front facing room on the amusement park side ,next time same room on the pier side, and lastly the day we were here but not our moving truck we stayed in the two bedroom suite oceanfront. All were beautiful!

Just returned from a weeks stay at Oceans One. My husband loved the room because of the view. It is nicely furnished and the view is wonderful. There were little things about the place that bothered me but nothing that would keep me from going there. Except that it is on the south end of the beach and We like the north end. We stayed in a one bedroom with panoramic view, you can lay in your bed and watch the ocean. So cool!! The check in is across the street, along with the parking. Of course it was October but you hardly ever even see a staff member besides seeing the maids out front smoking. Check in was easy and they were all friendly. I think if they were right on property the place would be kept up better. My one minor concern is no safe in the room, When I asked about this they said these are owned condos and we are really just property managers and they did not want safes. I like safes with maids coming in and out. No bathroom by the pool, you have to go up to the 2nd floor to go the bathroom and you wonder why everyone was complaining about the elevators always being wet in the summer. The elevators are in bad shape for being less than a year old, I hate to see them in 5 years. Paint is peeling, tiles are cracked on the floor, the glass is all scratched up and the handle bar in there is falling off. I notice the carpet in the halls is getting pretty dirty. I saw them cleaning it with a little carpet cleaner like I use at home. This place reminds me of a hotel that was thrown up quickly with some cheap craftsmanship. They wanted it to look nice but cheaply and did not want to put more money into it to keep it up. If you are a smoker you can not smoke anywhere on the property not even the balcony. There is a $250.00 fine for smoking. I did like the fact that you need a key to get into the building. And our maid did a good job. The price is very good. It was close to Friendly%26#39;s that you could walk to for a $2.70 breakfast. I love staying at Island Vista but for the price this made sense and besides the location I could deal with everything else.

  • Timeshare swap

I am trying to swap my time share for a week in Myrtle Beach though Interval. Not having much luck, actually having no luck at all. Interval has none available. My question to those that own time shares am I trying to swap to early or to late? Is Myrtle beach one of those locations that owners do not normally swap? Thanks for any input.

    Timeshare swap

When are you trying to trade? I have an RCI points resort timeshare in Myrtle Beach, and I find that I always have to reserve the week before the timeframe for points reservations, or I can%26#39;t get in.

    Timeshare swap

Looking for any week in July. I have my points through Diamond Resorts and using Interval to trade. Thanks for th info.

I heard there is a 3 year waiting list for MB swap. Not sure but that is what I heard.
