My husband and I will be in Charleston for a meeting Nov. 12-14. We are staying at the Mills House but would like to change hotels and stay Saturday (Nov. 15th) night. I was thinking about something in Mount Pleasant or Isle of Palms. We would like to see some of the plantations. Any recommendations would be appreciated. This is our first visit.

How about the Shem Creek Inn? www.shemcreekinn.com (relatively casual) or something on Wild Dunes (more upscale) or on the beach?

There are many choices - the Shem Creek Inn is on the water, surrounded by waterfront restaurants. The creek is the place where shrimp boats dock and dolphins swim and pelicans float and fly. However, you%26#39;ll be less than 10 minutes from downtown Charleston and the historic district. Will you have a car?

We will have a car. I checked availability online for the Shem Creek Inn. No luck. Is the Wild Dunes nice? I would like to have a little beach experience while I%26#39;m in the area. We will be staying 3 nights in the historice district. What is your recommendation for best plantation tour? We want to take in as much as we can around my business meetings. Thanks for all your help.
Wild Dunes is very nice as you will be very close to everything - ocean, golf, shopping, restaurants. You wanted to be near Mt. P and you%26#39;d be just a few minutes away. There are other beach areas too, - but for one night Isle Of Palms is a good bet (where Wild Dunes is located). The beaches are nice, flat - good for walking. Note that it can be windy and chilly in November; likely not bikini weather though I%26#39;ve seen people swim in January and February so anything is possible.
Some of our other islands have minimum stays that wouldn%26#39;t work for your trip. Try their website - you might be able to get a deal (though it%26#39;s curious that Shem Creek is sold out - I wonder what event is going on ?)
My first recommendation for a plantation tour is always Middleton Place. Plan to spend about half a day. Be sure to take a house tour. They have Plantation Days in the Stableyards on the week-ends the entire month of November. Craftsmen show various ways things were done ';back when';. It is different each year but always good.
There is an excellant fixed priced restaurant for lunch or you can get sandwiches (good chicken salad!), salads and drinks for a picnic (if not too cool) from a garden market near the parking area. There are nice picnic tables under some of the big oak trees between the parking area and the stableyards.
Have you considered staying downtown at a different hotel and making the beach a day trip? You might get a bargain at Priceline or some of the other discounts sites.
I heard the other day that the Holiday Inn at Folly Beach is closing for much needed remodeling but will reopen in the Spring. BEWARE - the Holliday Inn is still there!
Here I am, the broken record! the Old village Post house in Mt Pleasant is really nice.
